3 Development Version 3 Preparing for a new Stable Series. Because so amazingly much has changed
4 since the last stable series (but mostly because I am feeling too lazy to
5 spend the next hour writing up a list of everything new and different),
6 I'll stick with a simple summary.
4 7
8 *) Many many new applets have been added.
9 *) We have an entirely new configuration system based on
10 the Linux kernel config system.
11 *) Most applets have more features, more configurable options,
12 and are more standards compliant.
5 13
6 14

710.60.1
72
73 Stable Release
74
75
76 New Applets & New Features:
77 none. :)
78
79 Known Problems (to be fixed in 0.60.2)
80 * msh can segfault on constructs such as
81 for i in `ls *.c` ; do echo $i ; done
82 due to a memory allocation problem. This only seems to cause
83 problems when the backtick expands to be several k in size.
84
85
86 Bugfixes:
87 * Matt Kraai
88 -- Fixed msh to support underscores in variable names.
89 -- Fixed a sed problem with unsatisfied backrefs (the problem was
90 noted by Martin Bene).
91 -- Removed CONFIG_SH define entirely. Now one simply picks the shell
92 or shells they want as CONFIG_<foo> in Config.h
93 -- Fixed head to use ferror(3) to check for errors, not errno.
94 * Shu-Hao Chang <shuhao_chang@trend.com.tw>
95 -- Fixed sed handling of multiple -e commands
96 * Magick <magick@linux-fan.com>
97 -- Fixed an init bug with AskFirst and /dev/null
98 * Jaspreet Singh <jsingh@somanetworks.com>
99 -- Fixed both a segfault and cosmetic bug in route
100 * Erik Andersen
101 -- Made the insmod options CONFIG_FEATURE_NEW_MODULE_INTERFACE and
102 CONFIG_FEATURE_OLD_MODULE_INTERFACE mutually exclusive
103 -- xgetcwd.c now includes sys/param.h to ensure PATH_MAX is defined
104 -- Fixed a potential segfault with lash + CONFIG_FEATURE_CLEAN_UP
105 -- Removed uint64_t from dos2unix, avoiding C lib compat. problems.
106 * Glenn McGrath
107 -- Rewrite of tftp (commands match atftp, accepts -b, can use
108 non-standard ports, and is smaller).
109 -- Fixed unarchive exclude list handling
110 * Manuel Novoa III
111 -- rewrite of simplify_path so it behaves itself (fixing some
112 problems with mount and other applets).
113 -- Fixed ifconfig 'broadcast +' handling and disabled it by default
114 * Matthias ? <matthias@corelatus.com>
115 -- Fixed syslogd to log all messages from a single connection, not
116 just the first.

1220.60.0
123
124 Note:
125
126 For this release I have bumped the version number to 0.60.0. This
127 reflects the fact that this release is intended to form a new stable
128 BusyBox release series. If you need to rely on a stable version of
129 BusyBox, you should plan on using the stable 0.60.x series. If bugs
130 show up then I will release 0.60.1, then 0.60.2, etc... This is also
131 intended to deal with the fact that the BusyBox build system will be
132 getting a major overhaul for the next release and I don't want that to
133 break products that people are shipping. To avoid that, the new build
134 system will be released as part of a new BusyBox development series
135 that will have some not-yet-decided-on odd version number. Once things
136 stabablize and the new build system is working for everyone, then I
137 will release that as a new stable release series.
138
139 Critical Bugfixes:
140 * Matt Kraai
141 -- Fixed wget output file opening (wget failed in 0.52).
142 -- Fixed a memory leak in syslogd (found by Adam Slattery).
143 * Vladimir Oleynik, Matt Kraai, Erik Andersen
144 -- several nasty bugs in ash and msh. msh could not assign
145 any variables and had debug code still enabled. ash
146 had several compile errors (depending on selected options)
147 and variable assignment problems as well.
148
149 New Applets:
150 * David McCullough <davidm@snapgear.com> -- modprobe
151 * Vladimir Oleynik -- traceroute
152 * Erik Andersen -- pidof
153
154 New Scripts:
155 * David Schleef, Erik Andersen, Stuart Hughes -- depmod.pl
156 This is a replacement for the depmod program from the modutils
157 package, but is fully cross platform and is designed to run on
158 your host system (not on the target).
159
160 Other Changes:
161 * Erik Andersen
162 -- fixed busybox.spec so it should now work on redhat systems
163 -- fixed dos2unix and unix2dos so they should work once again
164 -- Adjustments to make busybox more uClinux friendly. Busybox
165 should now work on uClinux systems without needing and source
166 code changes (applets that won't work on uClinux systems are
167 now automagicaly disabled).
168 -- various things (cleanups, libc compatibility work, etc, etc)
169 * Jim Gleason <jimg@lineo.com>
170 -- Fixed for sed, where it failed to preserve whether or not the
171 line was previously altered when running a subst command.
172 * Matt Kraai
173 -- Made tar read 20 512byte blocks at a time (like GNU tar)
174 -- Allow msh.c assignments with the export and readonly commands.
175 -- Added CONFIG_FEATURE_DEVFS to enable devfs device names.
176 -- Better devfs support
177 -- Don't save/restore vi readonly flag if vi is compiled read-only.
178 -- Reworked rdate option handling (is now smaller).
179 -- Size reduction in ping
180 -- Always write dd counts to stderr
181 -- Allow multiple shells to be enabled
182 * Aaron Lehmann
183 -- slimmed down md5sum
184 -- contributed a nice new (hand written, not lex/yacc) Posix math
185 support for ash, which is once again a full posix shell.
186 * Felix von Leitner <leitner@convergence.de> -- patches to make busybox
187 work with dietlibc.
188 * David McCullough
189 -- Adjustments to make busybox more uClinux friendly
190 * Glenn McGrath
191 -- Fixed gzip so when a filename is '-' it will use stdin/stdout
192 -- dpkg rewrite. Should now be compatable with the real dpkg,
193 but needs more testing.
194 -- Updates to archiving tools (gunzip/gzip/cpio/ar/etc)
195 -- Rewrote uuencode, will allow base64 encoding to be used by wget
196 * Vladimir Oleynik
197 -- Fixed tr to support 'tr a-z A-Z' syntax,
198 -- Many ash corrections, optimizations, and cleanups.
199 -- optimizations for traceroute, md5sum, chown, ping
200 -- cmdedit updates and API change
201 -- Namespace cleanup (i.e. adding 'static' private function calls)
202 -- added "stopped jobs" warning to ash on exit
203 * Adam Slattery
204 -- Fixed ping compile problem
205 * Robert J. Osborne <rj@resourceinternational.com>
206 -- fixed a vi bug with delete and escape sequences on empty files.

218 problem on serial consoles with 2.4.3+ kernels.
219
220 New Applets:
221 * Laurence Anderson -- rpm2cpio applet, this obsoletes rpmunpack
222 which has now been removed from BusyBox

224 only supports unpacking the ascii cpio format.
225 * Vladimir Oleynik and Erik Andersen -- added ash, the most correct
226 busybox shell.
227 * Larry Doolittle -- hush, small shell designed specifically
228 for busybox. Quite usable but still a work in progress.
229 * Erik Andersen -- msh, minix shell. A very small but capable shell

260
2610.51
262 Critical Bugfixes:

455 * Larry Doolittle -- shell data structure cleanup, fixed buglets
456 in read, exec, and piped builtins
457 * Erik Andersen -- md5sum was broken in 0.48. Now fixed (and doesn't
458 use getline, shrinking static compiles (since nothing else used it).
459 * ?? -- squashed memory leak in shell prompt handling
460 * Mark Whitley -- Updates to style guide
461 * Mark Whitley -- Big cleanup in utility.c: style guide compliance,
462 de-macro-ifying some variables and functions
463 * Erik Andersen -- ls now honors CONFIG_FEATURE_AUTOWIDTH so it can find
464 the width and height of the console.
465 * Erik Andersen -- insmod now ignores -L and accepts the -o option.
466 * Erik Andersen -- updates so you can now select from the Makefile
467 whether or not to use the system's passwd and group functions.
468 Since most systems use GNU libc, this can save you from having to
469 install the /etc/nsswitch.conf configuration file and the required
470 libnss_* libraries. Adds 1.5k. You can now, also, disable this,
471 causing busybox to use the system's pwd.h and grp.h functions.

478 * Glenn McGrath -- tar now supports uncompressing tar files,
479 define CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_GZIP to use the -z option.
480 * Matt Kraai -- fix all usage of TRUE and FALSE so all apps now
481 return EXIT_SUCCESS or EXIT_FAILURE to the system.
482 Now TRUE and FALSE are set to the C standard where TRUE=1.
483 * me -- Fixed uname problem causing the kernel version to be
484 mis-detected (causing problems with poweroff, init,
485 and other things).
486 * Alcove, Julien Gaulmin <julien.gaulmin@alcove.fr> and
487 Nicolas Ferre <nicolas.ferre@alcove.fr> -- insmod support on ARM
488 and StrongArm, and suport for lsmod on older 2.0.x kernels.
489 * Kent Robotti -- Renamed unrpm to original rpmunpack, so you can use
490 an included shell script called unrpm as a front end to it. There's
491 also a shell script called undeb included for debian packages.
492 * Matt Kraai -- fix an infinite loop with ls -aR
493 * Larry Doolittle -- Shaved off about 100 bytes and 200 bytes heap
494 from date.c. Also document the "-d" option in the usage message.
495 * Gennady Feldman -- fixed dd to use blocksize when reading/writing,
496 (it was reading the whole thing and then writing it out). Also
497 updated usage information (was missing conv=notrunc) and added
498 conv=sync feature.
499 * Larry Doolittle (in collaboration with Matt Kraai) -- allow for a
500 pristine source directory -- where all the .o files and such are
501 not placed into the source tree. Thanks Larry!
502 * Larry Doolittle -- use the applet definitions in applets.h
503 to autogenerate the applet function and usage prototypes.
504 * Sebastien Huet, Arne Bernin, and Kent Robotti -- Add in tar -X and
505 fixed a bug breaking tar --exclude.

508 GNU-date compatible
509 * me -- Progress meter (optional) in wget
510 * Doolittle/me -- programs invoked by full path name take
511 precedence over applets unless CONFIG_FEATURE_SH_BUILTINS_ALWAYS_WIN
512 * Gaute B Strokkenes <gs234@cam.ac.uk> -- applets found using a
513 binary search instead of linear search. Much faster!
514 * new applets: cmp readlink
515 * Mark Whitley -- Removed advertising clause of Berkeley license
516 according to decision by the Regents of the University of
517 California; included reference
518 * tail's confusing special treatment of single digit options removed;
519 people should use -n instead
520 * Larry Doolittle -- \r handled now in echo and tr
521 * Matt Kraai -- rewrite of uniq
522 * Mark Whitley -- remix of xargs
523 * Jim Gleason <jimg@lineo.com> -- fixed tar so it no longer breaks
524 hard links.
525 * Matt Kraai -- logger now logs all arguments, not just the first
526 * Gennady Feldman -- syslogd no longer logs to localhost if compiled
527 for remote logging...
528 * Richard June <rjune@ims1.imagestream-is.com> -- support for 'gzip -d'
529 * various artists -- Other good stuff that I forgot to document.

536 * A bug in syslogd was fixed that allowed it to potentially fork-bomb
537 your system. Anyone using 0.46 syslogd should upgrade.
538 * Renamed busybox.defs.h to the more sensible "Config.h"
539 * Improved portability between different libcs.
540 * Many apps ported to use getopt()
541 * Common handling of '--help'
542 * All usage messages centralized.
543 * Added a bunch of new commands:
544 * 'rdate' contributed by Sterling Huxley <sterling@europa.com>

548 * dos2unix, unix2dos, reset, and unrpm.c (and lots of help
549 debugging) thanks to Kent Robotti <robotti@metconnect.com>.
550 * 'renice' command, thanks to Dave Cinege <dcinege@psychosis.com>
551 * 'xargs' (written by me)
552 * 'expr' contributed by Edward Betts <edward@debian.org>, based
553 on GNY expr

555 * syslogd can now log messages to remote hosts -- patch thanks
556 to Gyepi Sam <gyepi@praxis-sw.com>
557 * chroot can now call the builtin shell - Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
558 * 'make install' now creates relative symlinks, and added a new
559 'make install-hardlinks' target to (tada) install hardlinks.
560 * Rewrite of 'tail' to make it simpler, smaller, and more robust.
561 It now weighs only 2.25k (3k when full featured). The code is
562 cleaner too, thanks to Allen Soard <esp-software@mail.hypermart.net>
563 * Add optional ls file sorting, thanks to a patch from
564 Sterling Huxley <sterling@europa.com>
565 * Fixed chmod option parsing so things like 'chmod -r /tmp/file'

567 * Fixed tar handling of stdin and stdout
568 * Renamed "internal.h" to the more sensible "busybox.h"
569 * Preliminary support for GNU HURD.
570 * Updated my devps and devmtab kernel patches for the latest 2.2.x

580 * Better portability. Now should compile cleanly with libc5,
581 GNU libc 2.0 and 2.1, and various Linux kernels including
582 2.0.x, 2.2.x, and to 2.4.0-test*. (patch for 2.4.x kernels
583 to make /proc/mounts behave included in the kernel-patches dir).
584 * Fixed a _horrible_ bug where 'tar -tvf' could unlink
585 local files that matched tarball contents!!! Fix thanks
586 to Marius Groeger <mgroeger@sysgo.de>
587 * Fixed a nasty bug in tar when could mess up saved symlinks.
588 * Fixed tar creation support when reading from stdin ('tar -cf - . ')
589 thanks to Daniel Quinlan <quinlan@transmeta.com>
590 * Updates to handle Linux 2.4.0 kernels (kludged around the
591 "none" entries in /proc/mounts, added a hack to make sysinfo
592 work with both old and new kernels).
593 * Fixed insmod module option parsing for options lacking an '='.
594 Fix thanks to Marc Nijdam <marc_nijdam@hp.com>
595 * Fixed segfault with 'cut -f 1 -d:' and added 'cut -s' suport.
596 Fix thanks to Arne Bernin <arne@matrix.loopback.org>
597 * Several fixes from Marius Groeger <mag@sysgo.de>
598 - Added support for "sh -c command args..."
599 - Fixed globbing, i.e. 'echo * *' and 'echo "******"' now work.
600 - Added shell environment variable substitution
601 - Added the "read" shell builtin.
602 * Fixed cursor editing in cmdedit.c. The following keyboard sequence
603 used to create an infinite loop: ls, cursor up, left, down.
604 * Added support for being a login shell, so things like
605 '-su' or '-sh' (stuff where argv[0][0]=='-') will now always
606 invoke the shell. Now you can use BusyBox as a login shell.
607 * ls.c now ignores '-g', since some ftp clients like that sort
608 of thing. Patch thanks to David Vrabel <dvrabel@arcom.co.uk>
609 * Fix to init.c from Stuart Menefy <Stuart.Menefy@st.com> so that
610 it always sets the controlling terminal before running any programs
611 * Several fixes from Matt Kraai <kraai@alumni.carnegiemellon.edu>
612 - Fixed tr so it recognizes standard escape sequences.
613 Merged common escape seq. code from tr and echo into utility.c.
614 - Major work in updating/cleaning up the docs, and getting the
615 new SGML based docs into shape.
616 - cleanup of ar.c
617 - BusyBox should now poweroff when asked to do so.
618 - Fixed 'ln -n' and 'ln -s' so they both work properly.
619 * Reorganized signal names in kill.c for better architecture support
620 -- patch thanks to simon wood <simon@mungewell.uklinux.net>
621 * In 0.43, backspace and delete worked properly, but with 0.45,
622 it just echoed a ^? for backspace, and ^H for control-h. This
623 was due to a broken macro in init.c, that is now fixed.
624 * Removed sfdisk from BusyBox. It was buggy, fat, and we really
625 couldn't maintain it very well, so including it was not really
626 very appropriate. Those wanting an fdisk are invited to
627 grab a copy from util-linux.
628 * Added 'dumpkmap' to allow people to dump a binary keymap, which can
629 then be loaded in by 'loadkmap' -- submitted by
630 Arne Bernin <arne@matrix.loopback.org>
631 * Fixed NFS so it supports 2.4.x kernels and NFSv3.
632 * Brand, new versions of grep and sed which use libc regex routines,
633 thanks to Mark Whitley <markw@codepoet.org>. The hand-tooled
634 "regexp.[ch]" files have been removed. Much help on these from
635 Matt Kraai as well.

642 * Now compiles vs libc5 (which can save lots of space for
643 embedded systems).
644 * Added CONFIG_FEATURE_TRIVIAL_HELP which compiles out most all of the
645 help messages (i.e --help). Saves 17k over a full compile.
646 * Added cut and tr from minix, since due to the license change,
647 we can now use minix code. Minix tr saves 4k.
648 * insmod now works. It costs 29k, but imagine an initrd with a
649 staticly linked busybox containing only insmod and sh, a few /dev
650 entries, and a kernel module or two... It doesn't get smaller
651 then this folks (I pity the fool that writes insmod in asm ;-).
652 Many kudos go to Ron Alder <alder@lineo.com> for finishing this off!
653 * Added a mini ar archive utility, especially written for BusyBox by
654 Glenn McGrath <bug1@netconnect.com.au>
655 * Added mktemp, contributed by Daniel Jacobowitz <dan@debian.org>
656 * Added setkeycodes, for those that have wierd keyboard buttons.
657 * Added md5sum, uuencode and uudecode -- thanks to Alfred M. Szmidt
658 <ams@trillian.itslinux.org> for contributing these.
659 * Added 'grep -v' option (inverted search) and updated
660 docs accordingly. -beppu
661 * Wrote which
662 * Replaced the telnet implementation with one written by
663 Tomi Ollila <too@iki.fi> It works great and costs 3k.
664 * BusyBox sh (lash) now supports being used as a standalone shell. When
665 CONFIG_FEATURE_SH_STANDALONE_SHELL is defined, all the busybox commands may
666 be invoked as shell internals. Best used when compiling staticly
667 (i.e. DOSTATIC=true)
668 * BusyBox sh (lash) internals now behave as expected wrt pipes
669 and redirects.
670 * Fixed ping warnings -- fix from Sascha Ziemann <szi@aibon.ping.de>
671 * Fixed update segfault
672 * Fixed mknod -- minor number was always 0
673 * Fixed tar option parsing, so both "tar xvf foo.tar" and
674 "tar -xvf foo.tar" now work (i.e. no "-" before options)
675 (this was very broken in 0.43).
676 * Several contributions from Randolph Chung <tausq@debian.org>.
677 * cp/mv now accepts the -f flag
678 * tail can now accept -<num> commands (e.g. -10) for better
679 compatibility with the standard tail command
680 * added a simple id implementation; doesn't support sup. groups yet
681 * logname used getlogin(3) which uses utmp. Now it doesn't.
682 * whoami used getpwuid(3) which uses libc NSS. Now it behaves.
683 * Add support for "noatime" and "nodiratime" mount flags to mount.
684 * Changed 'umount -f' to mean force, and actually use umount2.
685 * Changed 'umount -l' to mean "Do not free loop device".

689 * zcat now works (wasn't working since option parsing was broken)
690 * Renamed "mnc" to the more correct "nc" (for netcat).
691 * Makefile intelligence updates
692 * Changed the way init parses /etc/inittab entries to avoid problems
693 with commands that contain colons in them. Fix thanks to
694 Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
695 * Fixed a warning in utility.c due to char being unsigned on Linux/PPC,
696 Fix thanks to Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
697 * Made "killall" complain (not error and exit) about processes that it
698 cannot find by name -- Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
699 * Fixed more and ps to have sensible terminal width defaults, thanks
700 to Pavel Roskin.

707 and "--" support from Pavel Roskin.
708 * Fixed segfault caused by "cp -a -a" and similar abuses.
709 * Implemented "rm -- <foo>". Implementation fixed by Pavel Roskin.
710 * "which" rewritten to use stat(). Fixes to improve its compatability
711 with traditional implementations -- Pavel Roskin.
712 * "mount" now reports errors from nfsmount() and assumes NFS mount
713 if ':' is present in the device name - Pavel Roskin
714 * Fixed exit status for killall - Pavel Roskin
715 * Fixed 'swapon -a' and 'swapoff -a', which were broken.
716 * Fixed 'mount -a' so it works as expected.
717 * Implemented 'ls -R' (enabled by enabling CONFIG_FEATURE_LS_RECURSIVE)
718 * Implemented "ping -s", fixed error messages and argument parsing -
719 Pavel Roskin
720 * Syslogd will not go to background if "-n" is given. Better help
721 and argument checking -- Pavel Roskin
722 * Fixed a small bug that could cause tar to emit warning messages
723 and not extract the first file in a directory in some cases
724 of nested directories. Thanks to Kevin Traas <kevin@netmaster.com>
725 for helping track this one down.
726 * More doc updates
727 * Fixed grep "Line too long" problem -- John Beppu
728 * Fixed 'grep -q -i B some_file' so it works
729 * math takes input from stdin if no args are given. -- John Beppu

746 * Major update to the provided documentation.
747 * Busybox now includes a shell! It currently costs 7.5 k (plus an
748 additional 2.5 k if you compile in command line editing). Handles
749 job control, has the usual set of builtins, and does everything
750 except for handling programming statements (if, while, etc...)
751 * Busybox can now work perfectly when /proc is disabled, thereby
752 saving a bunch of memory (kernel /proc support is not thin). This
753 is done by making use of some nice kernel patches I wrote up to
754 support the features that busybox requires and that /proc usually
755 provides. To enable this, turn on CONFIG_FEATURE_USE_DEVPS_PATCH and
756 patch your kernel with the devps patch in the kernel-patches/
757 directory.
758 * Wrote basename, dirname, killall, and uptime.
759 * tar has been completely rewritten by me. Both tar creation and
760 extraction are now well behaved. Costs 7.6k with all optional
761 tar features enabled, and 5k for just tar extraction support.
762 * Added freeramdisk, which will free up all memory associated
763 with a ram disk. Contributed by Emanuele Caratti <wiz@iol.it>
764 and then adjusted a bit by me.
765 * Added tr from John Lombardo <john@deltanet.com>
766 * Added echo and test (from me).
767 * Added usleep contributed by Nicolas Pitre <nico@cam.org>
768 * BusyBox's bss size has been majorly reduced (was 384668, is now 28740).
769 * Several fixes from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>:
770 - When `tail' fails to open a file it now exits.
771 - When `syslogd' is given the `-n' option it should still use
772 fork() for running klogd.
773 * nslookup types are now changed to u_int32_t (instead of uint32_t)
774 changed per a patch from Pascal Bellard <pascal.bellard@ascend.com>
775 * Fixed "du" so it gives the same answers as GNU "du" (busybox du used
776 to count hard-linked files more then once). Many thanks to
777 Friedrich Vedder <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de> for the fix.
778 * Removed /proc dependancies for init and free (while maintaining
779 exactly the same functionality). /proc takes up 90k of kernel
780 space, so it is nice to avoid using it at all costs.
781 * init no longer tries to mount /proc (unless there is less the 1 meg
782 free). Use of /proc (or not) is policy that should be set up in
783 /etc/fstab (or in hardcoded scripts), not in init.
784 * Fixed rebooting when init runs as an initrd.
785 * Fixes and updates from Karl M. Hegbloom <karlheg@debian.org>
786 - update.c rewritten to look more like update-2.11
787 - moveed the inode hash out of du.c and into utility.c to make
788 it a common resource that can be used by other apps.
789 - cp_mv.c now checks inodes to see if a source and dest are
790 the same, and prints an error (instead of endlessly looping).
791 - mv now attempts to do a rename, and will fall back to doing
792 a copy only if the rename fails.
793 - Syslogd now supports multiple concurrent connections
794 * Several fixes from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>:
795 - Fixes to sort. Removed "-g", fixed and added "-r"
796 - Fixes to the makefile for handling "strip"
797 * An initial telnet implementation was added by
798 Randolph Chung <tausq@debian.org>.
799 * Fixed a bug where "sed 's/foo/bar/g'" (i.e. a script w/o a "-e")
800 * ps now supports CONFIG_FEATURE_AUTOWIDTH, and can adjust its width
801 to match the terminal (defaults to width=79 when this is off).
802 * ps now accepts (and ignores) all options except for "--help" (which
803 as would be expected displays help).
804 * Fixed mount'ing loop devices when the filesystem type was not
805 specified. It used to revert to non-loop after the first try.
806 * all mallocs now use xmalloc (and so are OOM error safe), and
807 the common error handling saves a few bytes. Thanks to
808 Bob Tinsley <bob@earthrise.demon.co.uk> for the patch.
809 * Fix "+" parsing bug in date, from "Merle F. McClelland" <mfm@cts.com>.
810 * Fix symlink following bug in chmod -R and friends.
811 * Now allows SYSV style 'chown foo:bar' in addition to 'chown foo.bar'
812 * Fixed a bug in the busybox globbing routine such that 'find /dir -name [i]'
813 no longer segfaults.

820
821 * Fairly massive restructuring of umount.c to deal with remounting
822 busy devices read-only. Adds a -r option to control that; it is
823 optionally compiled in with CONFIG_FEATURE_REMOUNT
824 * Added a bunch of functions to mtab.c to interact with the
825 {get, set, end}mntent interface; as it turns out, those functions do
826 not appear to be re-entrant, and that causes a lot of problems with
827 the way umount was originally written.
828 * Makes init send TERM and KILL (instead of HUP and KILL) on reboot
829 to be more consistent with sysvinit
830 * Changes to init.c to use the new -r option to umount. Also increased
831 the sleep time between the time the TERM and KILL signals are sent
832
833 - Randolph Chung
834
835
836 * cp.c, mv.c: removed, replaced by cp_mv.c which has been
837 extensively rewritten from the original cp.c.
838 * Fixed cp and mv so if the source and destination are a the
839 same directory it will print an error and continue.
840 * Also added a warning message to the `mv' usage string saying that
841 this is not GNU mv, and it will break hard links. cp also breaks
842 hard links.
843 * ln.c: implemented `-n' switch, no-deref symlinks.
844 * include<sys/param.h>: and use PATH_MAX everywhere. busybox: File
845 * name buffer overrun guards to prevent future crashes.
846 - Always check exit status.
847 - Purge all use of `creat()', replace with `open()'.
848 * utility.c
849 - recursiveAction was overriding the value of followLinks thus
850 ignoring it.
851 - isDirectory now takes a followLinks boolean, updated all callers
852 - copyFile had the followLinks logic reversed.
853 * messages.c: New file. Put common error message strings all in
854 one place in an attempt to shrink the binary a little.

862 * _have_ to put a "-" in front of tar options. Tar could inadvertently
863 * change permissions and ownership on
864 certain directories pointed to by symlinks.
865 * Made grep and grep -h do the right thing wrt printing
866 the file name (it failed to print files names in many cases).
867 * Fix a namespace aliasing problem wereby if du was built in, the
868 symlink for both du and dutmp would be installed, or then rm was
869 built in, the symlinks for both rm and rmmod would be installed.
870 * Added a closelog() to init.c after loging -- fix thanks to
871 Taketoshi Sano <kgh12351@nifty.ne.jp>
872 * Rewrote and simplified logger. Added the "-t" option, and made it
873 behave itself a bit better.
874 * Optional support contributed by Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>
875 for the kernel init chroot patch by Werner Almesberger, which
876 allows init to chroot to a new device, and umount the old one.
877 * Fixed bug that wouldn't let one chown a symlink -- it would
878 always dereference before. -beppu
879 * Fixed a bug where init could have reference already freed memory.
880 Found and fixed by Taketoshi Sano <kgh12351@nifty.ne.jp>
881 * Several contributions from Friedrich Vedder <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de>
882 * Added (and documented) "-n" option for head
883 * Cleanup for a number of usage messages -- also
884 contributed Friedrich Vedder <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de>
885 * Cosmetic fix to busybox.c (Don't print a comma at the
886 end of line if there are no more application names).
887 * Fixed a stupid bug in "head" option handling ("head -n"
888 would segfault).
889 * Moved commonly used functions "xmalloc()" and "exit()"
890 to utility.c (with proper #ifdef's).
891 * Created a tiny tail implementation, removing -c, -q, -v, and making
892 tail -f work only with a single file. This reduced tail from 6k to
893 2.4k. The bigger/more featured tail can still be had by disabling
894 CONFIG_FEATURE_SIMPLE_TAIL in busybox.defs.h
895 * Ping now falls back to doing the right thing if /etc/protocols
896 turns up missing.
897 * Fixed mount and umount. Previously they could leak loop device
898 allocations, causing the system to quickly run out. Fix for umount
899 by Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>, and mount was fixed by me.
900 * ls formatting on eight charactor user names fixed by
901 Randolph Chung <tausq@debian.org>.
902 * cp could, when copying symlinks, change permissions of the
903 files pointed to by the symlinks.
904 * Several fixes from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>:
905 - `chown' with 1 argument displayed the error incorrectly
906 - `fdflush', `length' and `printf' crashed if run without arguments
907 - `fdflush' tried to flush itself using *argv
908 - added "skip" and "seek" to dd.
909 - ls no longer messus up output when combining files and
910 directories on the command line
911 * swapoff -a was not working. Now it is.
912 * init did not cleanly unmount filesystems on reboot. Now it does.
913 * "sed -ne s/foo/bar/" worked but "sed -n -e s/foo/bar/" didn't.
914 Now both work.
915 * Some architectures (PowerPc) assume chars are unsigned, so they could
916 not distinguish between EOF and '\0xFF' in sed. Sed now uses ints.
917 * Began converting error handling to use some common routines
918 in utility.c
919 * syslogd now has better message handling and ignores SIGHUP.
920 * install.sh had a bug preventing installation to the specified
921 target directory. Fix from Gilbert Coville <gilbert@mvista.com>
922 * You can now spefify alternative strip commands -- change
923 also from Gilbert Coville.

929 * New Apps: wc, hostid, logname, tty, whoami, yes -- all contributed
930 by Edward Betts <edward@debian.org>
931 * Fixed a bug in both cp and mv preventing 'cp foo/README bar'
932 type commands (file in a directory to another directory) from
933 working.
934 * Fixed a logger bug that caused garbage to be written to the syslog
935 (unless you used busybox syslog, which hid the bug). Thanks to
936 Alex Holden <alex@linuxhacker.org> for the fix.
937 * /bin/true and /bin/false were echoing a blank line when run.
938 Now fixed.
939 * mkdir -p would print an error when asked to mkdir an existing dir
940 with no interveining subdirectories.
941 * Fixed "syslogd -O" so that it works. Added -o loop option for mount,
942 * and support in umount for loop
943 devices. Support is toggled by MOUNT_LOOP feature -- Ben Collins
944 <bcollins@debian.org>
945 * Several fixes from Marco Pantaleoni <panta@prosa.it> compile in
946 * fullWrite() not only if CONFIG_TAR is defined, but also
947 if CONFIG_CP or CONFIG_MV are (fullWrite() is referenced by copyFile())
948 * add some compiler optimizations to further reduce executable size
949 (as a side note, on my machines the largest code is generated
950 by gcc 2.95.2 with -Os ! The smallest by plain gcc 2.7.2.3 with
951 -O2 -m386 ...)
952 * Compile now won't fail if busybox.def.h defines
953 CONFIG_FEATURE_INITRD but not CONFIG_INIT. (init_main used to be
954 referenced, but not compiled)
955 * Fixed a bug in setting TERM for serial console support. TERM now
956 defaults to "ansi" for serial consoles.
957 * Fixed a bug in handling the CONSOLE env. variable for serial
958 * consoles.

965 * loadacm contributed by Peter Novodvorsky <petya@logic.ru>
966 for loading application character maps for Unicode fonts.
967 * Major init re-work. init now supports inittab (slightly different
968 but similar to sysvinit), allowing me to get all the policy out of
969 init and into the conf file. It works just fine without inittab
970 being present, but if you dont like the default behavior you can
971 now do something about it. Init is much cleaner as a result.
972 * Fixed an bug in syslogd causing it to stop after 20 minutes. -erik
973 * Fixed an embarrasing segfault in head -beppu Fixed the embarrasing
974 * failure of 'logger -p'. -erik Added the -s option to du -beppu
975 * Re-worked the source tree a bit so it will compile under glibc 2.0.7
976 with the 2.0.x Linux kernel.
977 * Added 'grep -q' thanks to a patch from "Konstantin Boldyshev"
978 <konst@voshod.com>.
979 * Grep -i previously failed on UPPER CASE patterns due to a silly
980 regexp implementation bug that is now fixed.
981 * Fixed a bug where tar would set, and then clear SGID and SUID bits.
982 * Fixed a bug where tar would not set the user and group on device
983 special files.
984 * Fixed a bug where tar would not restore the time to files. Fixed a
985 * major security problem with tar -- it changed ownership
986 of any file pointed to by a symlink to 777 (like say libc....)
987 Ouch!!!
988 * cp and mv were very broken when moving directories. I have rewritten
989 them so they should now work as expected.
990 * sed now supports addresses (numeric or regexp, with negation) and
991 has an append command, thanks to Marco Pantaleoni <panta@prosa.it>
992 * Fixed dmesg. It wasn't parsing its options (-n or -s) properly.
993 * Some cosmetic fixes to ls output formatting to make it behave more
994 like GNU ls.
995 * Fixed a stupid segfault in kill. Several fixes from Friedrich Vedder
996 * <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de>:
997 - Added gunzip -t, removed gunzip.c dead code,
998 - fixed several typos
999 - Glibc 2.0.7 and libc5 compile fixes
1000 * Fixed a bug where 'mknod --help' would segfault.

1006 * New Apps: ping, hostname, and mkfifo contributed by Randolph Chung
1007 <tausq@debian.org>. 3 items off the TODO list!
1008 * I wrote free (just calls "cat /proc/meminfo"). Added tail, based on
1009 * tail from GNU textutils-1.19, but adjusted
1010 to suit my evil purposes. Costs 6k. I'll make it smaller
1011 sometime.
1012 * on reboot, init called 'umount -a -n', which caused errors
1013 when CONFIG_MTAB was not enabled. Changed to 'umount -a', which does
1014 the right thing.
1015 * init will now try to run /sbin/getty if it is present (for easy
1016 integration with the about-to-be-released tinylogin.)
1017 * kill now behaves itself properly, added 'kill -l' to list signals 'ls
1018 * -l' was failing on long directories, since my_getid was leaking
1019 one file descriptor per file. Oops.
1020 * Fixed rebooting from init. I'd accidently left some debugging code
1021 * in
1022 which blocked reboots.
1023 * Fixed reboot, halt (and added poweroff) such that they handle it when
1024 init is not at PID 1 (like when running in an initrd).

1033 * Fixed a segfault in 'umount -a' when a badly formed /etc/fstab
1034 file existed.
1035 * df will not exit on error, but will stat all mounted filesystems.
1036 * Fixed tar so uid/gid/permissions on extracted tarballs will be
1037 correct.
1038 * Fixed find -name so it properly uses shell wildcard patterns
1039 (i.e. `*', `?', and `[]') instead of regular expressions, which
1040 was causing some confusing and unexpected behavior.
1041 * Added klogd to syslogd, so now the log will contain both system and
1042 kernel messages.
1043 * syslogd now creates the /dev/log socket to make sure it is there, and
1044 is actually a socket with the right permissions.
1045 * I've taken a first step to making busybox not need the /proc
1046 filesystem. Most apps don't need it. Those that _require_ it,
1047 will complain if you enable them when you disable
1048 CONFIG_FEATURE_USE_PROCFS.
1049

1053 * Wrote a micro syslogd, and a logger util (to log things to the syslog
1054 from the command line or scripts) With both compiled in, costs 4k.
1055 * Fixed 'make install' so symlinks are installed in their proper
1056 * locations. Changed the build system slightly so that features can
1057 * now be enabled
1058 or disabled from the busybox.defs.h header file, without trying to
1059 compile in a source file named after that featue (unless that file
1060 exists).
1061 * Several options are now moved into busybox.defs.h Now 'rm -R' and 'rm
1062 * -r' both work. dd now properly handles input beyond 1 block from
1063 * stdin. Fixed a bug where tar unpacked everything a directories.
1064 * Moved some code

1082 * Don't try to close the file descriptor of a pipein tar. (fix also
1083 * from
1084 Eric Delaunay).
1085 * Made createPath be quiet (again thanks to Eric Delaunay). If
1086 * CONFIG_CONSOLE_CMD_IF_RC_SCRIPT_EXITS is defined, then whatever
1087 command you define it as will be run if the init script exits.
1088 * Updated install.sh to make it more robust (thanks to Adam Di Carlo)
1089 * NFS support added to mount by Eric Delaunay. It costs 10k when
1090 * compiled
1091 in, but that is still a big win for those that use NFS.
1092 * Made 'rm -f' be silent for non-existant files (thanks to Eric
1093 * Delaunay). changed zcat.c to gunzip.c. It now obeys the principle
1094 * of least surprise
1095 and acts as god intended gunzip and zcat to act. They answer
1096 --help and obey the '-c' flag.
1097 * Fixed a bug in mv which caused it to not move files when the
1098 * destination
1099 was a directory.
1100 * Fixed a decimal-instead-of-octal bug causing mkdir to make
1101 * directories
1102 with very wrong permissions.
1103 * chmod would overwrite file permissions instead of modifying them.
1104 Now it properly modifies permissions.
1105 * Init now sends warnings destined for the console to /dev/console to
1106 * ensure
1107 they show up on whatever the active console it. Otherwise
1108 important messages (for example that the system is rebooting) were
1109 not seen when switched to a different VT.

1118 * Fixed more.c to compile autowidth on sparc and set initial winsize
1119 to 0,0 in case the TIOCGWINSZ ioctl fails. Fix thanks to Eric

1134 * ls -l now displays link names outside the current directory,
1135 Patch thanks to Eric Delaunay
1136 * init now properly handles sparc serial consoles and does a
1137 better job of finding the real console device rather than using
1138 /dev/console which doesn't support job control. Patch also thanks
1139 to Eric Delaunay.
1140 * more started to read from stdin after the last file was finished, and
1141 options were not parsed correctly (fix thanks to Eric Delaunay).
1142 * more will now use the terminal size if CONFIG_FEATURE_AUTOWIDTH is on.
1143 * rm wouldn't remove a symlink unless the symlink was valid. This was
1144 a side effect of the busybox 0.32 recursiveAction() fix. Things
1145 should now work correctly.
1146 * grep wouldn't grep stdin. Now it does. sed wouldn't sed stdin. Now
1147 * it does. sed was appending a \n to the end of lines with
1148 * replacements.
1149 Now it doesn't do that.

1172 * Fixed mkdir -m option so that it works. kill segfaulted w/o any

1177 * with full regular expressions!). Fixed a stupid seg-fault in sync
1178 * Fixed mount -- mount -a failed to parse and apply mount options Fixed
1179 * umount -n (patch thanks to Matthew Grant <grantma@anathoth.gen.nz>)
1180 * umount -a no longer umounts /proc Added CONFIG_MTAB, allowing (at the
1181 * cost of ~1.5k and the need for a rw /etc)
1182 folks to use a real /etc/mtab file instead of a symlink to
1183 /proc/mounts. mount, and umount will add/remove entries and df
1184 will now use /etc/mtab if CONFIG_MTAB is defined.
1185 * Fixed a nice bug in recursiveAction() which caused it to infinitely

1187 followed the /dev/fd link over to /proc. recursiveAction() now

12100.30
1211 Major changes -- lots of stuff rewritten. If you have any problems
1212 with busybox, or notice any bugs -- please let me know so I can fix
1213 it. These changes include:
1214
1215 Core Changes:
1216 * busybox can now invoke apps in two ways: via symlinks to the
1217 busybox binary, and as 'busybox [function] [arguments]...'
1218 * When invoked as busybox, the list of currently compiled in
1219 functions is printed out (no this is not bloat -- the list has
1220 to be there anyway to map invocation name to function).
1221 * busybox no longer parses command lines for apps or displays their
1222 usage info. Each app gets to handle (or not handle) this for
1223 itself.
1224 * Eliminated monadic, dyadic, descend, block_device, and
1225 postprocess. It was cumbersome to have so many programs
1226 cobbled together in this way. Without them, the app is much
1227 more granular.
1228 * All shared code now lives in utility.c, and is properly
1229 ifdef'ed to be only included for those apps requiring it.
1230 * Eliminated struct FileInfo (the basis of monadic, dyadic, etc)
1231 so now each app has the function prototype of (da-dum): extern
1232 int foo_main(int argc, char** argv); which speeds integration
1233 of new apps.
1234 * Adjusted the Makefile to make it easier to
1235 {en|dis}able debugging.
1236 * Changed default compiler optimization to -Os
1237 (optimize for smaller binaries).
1238
1239 App Changes:
1240 * To cope with the new app function prototype and the removal of
1241 monadic, dyadic, etc, the following apps were re-written:
1242 * cat - Works same as always. chgrp, chmod, chown -
1243 * rewrite. Combined into a single
1244 source file. Absorbed patches from Enrique Zanardi
1245 <ezanard@debian.org> that removes the dependency on
1246 libc6 libnss* libraries.
1247 * cp - Can now do 'cp -a' can can copy devices,
1248 pipes, symlinks, as well as recursive or non-recursive
1249 dir copies.
1250 * fdflush - adjusted to remove dependancy on struct
1251 * FileInfo. find - Now includes some basic regexp matching
1252 which will be the basic of a future mini-sed.
1253 * ln - Same functionality. mkdir - Added -p flag to
1254 * feature set. mv - rewrite. rm - Added -f flag to
1255 * feature set. rmdir - Same functionality. swapon,
1256 * swapoff - Combined into a single binary. No longer
1257 uses /etc/swaps. swap{on|off} -a uses /etc/fstab
1258 instead.
1259 * touch - Same functionality. date - adjusted with a patch
1260 * from Matthew Grant <grantma@anathoth.gen.nz>
1261 to accomodate glibc timezone support. I then ripped out GNU
1262 getopt.
1263 * mkswap -- new version merged from util-linux. Can now make
1264 >128Meg swaps.
1265 * Replaced the old and star, unstar, and tarcat with the tar
1266 implementation from sash. Now tar behaves as god intended it
1267 to (i.e. tar -xvf <file> and tar -cf <file> <dir> work).
1268 * dd -- rewritten. Can with with files, stdin, stdout. Added the
1269 * following new apps: loadfont -- added from debian boot floppies
1270 * chroot -- added based on a patch from Paolo Molaro
1271 * <lupus@lettere.unipd.it> grep -- I just wrote it. Only matches
1272 * simple strings ps -- I just wrote it. Has _no_ options at all,
1273 * but works. fsck_minix, mkfs_minix -- added from util-linux, but
1274 * I ripped out
1275 internationalization and such to make them smaller.
1276 * sfdisk -- Added from util-linux (minus
1277 * internationalization and such). Probably some other
1278 * changes that I forgot to document...
